WASHINGTON (Nov. 4, 2025) — Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, one of the most influential and polarizing figures in modern American politics, has died at the age of 84, his family said Tuesday.

Cheney passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his wife Lynne, daughters Liz and Mary, and other family members. According to the statement, his death resulted from complications of pneumonia and long-term cardiac and vascular disease, illnesses that had challenged him for decades.

“Dick Cheney was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved his country deeply,” the family said. “He taught us to live with courage, honor, and kindness. We are forever grateful for the love and leadership he gave to his family and to the United States.”

A Legacy of Power and Controversy

Serving as the 46th vice president of the United States under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, Cheney wielded an unprecedented level of influence in the White House. He was a principal architect of the U.S. response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, shaping national security policy and guiding the country into wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Before his vice presidency, Cheney’s career spanned decades in both government and business. A former Wyoming congressman, White House chief of staff, and Secretary of Defense under George H.W. Bush, he oversaw the 1991 Gulf War and was praised for his steady leadership during the crisis. After leaving government service, Cheney became CEO of Halliburton, a global energy company, before being tapped as Bush’s running mate in 2000.

Though caricatured as the hidden hand behind the Bush presidency, Cheney’s authority and experience were undeniable. Colleagues described him as a man of few words but immense influence, steering critical decisions on military action, intelligence gathering, and national defense.

The War on Terror and Its Aftermath

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Cheney was inside the White House as hijacked planes struck New York City and Washington. “At that moment, you knew this was no accident — it was an act of war,” he recalled in a later interview. From that day forward, Cheney became one of the fiercest advocates of the War on Terror, supporting preemptive military strikes and expanded surveillance powers.

His push for the Iraq invasion in 2003, based on intelligence that later proved faulty, remains one of the most controversial chapters in U.S. foreign policy. To his critics, Cheney represented excessive executive power; to his supporters, he was a patriot defending the homeland after a devastating attack.

Rift with the Modern GOP

In later years, Cheney broke sharply with the direction of the Republican Party, particularly over Donald Trump’s leadership. He labeled Trump a “coward” and “the greatest threat to the Republic in my lifetime.” His daughter, Liz Cheney, followed in his footsteps, emerging as one of the few GOP lawmakers willing to challenge Trump after the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

In a symbolic parting act, Cheney cast his final presidential vote in 2024 for Vice President Kamala Harris, saying it was a vote for “democracy over demagoguery.”

A Life of Service and Resilience

Despite suffering five heart attacks and undergoing a heart transplant in 2012, Cheney remained active in political discourse. He often credited the transplant as “the gift of life itself” and continued to speak publicly about leadership, national security, and the challenges of governance.

Former President George W. Bush praised his longtime ally in a statement Tuesday, calling him “a decent, honorable man” who “served with integrity, intelligence, and an unyielding sense of purpose.”

As one of the most consequential vice presidents in American history, Cheney’s legacy remains deeply complex — defined by both his unwavering patriotism and his willingness to exercise power without hesitation. His influence on U.S. foreign policy and executive authority will be studied — and debated — for generations to come.
